Reasoning and Critical Thinking
  • Story concepts: distinguishing main ideas and supporting details; sequencing plot events; identifying story elements; plot, character, setting
  • Comprehension: discriminating between true and false, fact and fiction, cause and effect; making inferences from information provided; using familiar vocabulary and context to determine meaning of a passage with unfamiliar words
Understanding Form and Style
  • Structure: using knowledge of organization and characteristics of forms of writing as a guide before and during reading to predict events and meaning
  • Recognizing different forms: fables, poems, stories, plays
Vocabulary Building
  • Using a variety of strategies to determine meaning of unfamiliar words: context of sentence, breaking words into syllables, phonics skills
  • Adding new words: using specialized terms for different subject areas
  • Word structure: continuing work on compound words, prefixes, and suffixes
  • Developing dictionary skills: finding homophones, synonyms and antonyms
Use of language Conventions
  • Grammar: past tense verbs, regular and irregular; noun plurals and spellings
  • Punctuation: apostrophes in contractions; abbreviations; end punctuation
  • Capitalization: proper nouns, titles, countries, nationalities, languages
  • Spelling: commonly confused words—to/too/two; their/they’re/there; can/may
