Reasoning and Critical Thinking
  • Reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction materials: quest and trickster stories from various cultures and time periods, classical legends, historical and archaeological information
  • Reading for connections between elements of plot and relationships between characters and plot events; identifying motivations for characters
  • Summarizing main ideas and key details in information passages
  • Comprehension: sequencing events for easier recall; making judgments and drawing conclusions; recognizing inferences and implications; making predictions about future plot events from story clues
Understanding Form and Style
  • Recognizing the characteristics of informative articles
  • Recognizing the characteristics of quest stories and legends
  • Using knowledge of different forms to adjust reading strategies and speed
Knowledge of Language Structures
  • Using knowledge of elements of grammar, oral and written language structures to understand what is read
  • Recognizing varied sentence structures from different cultures and time periods
Vocabulary Building
  • Using a variety of strategies to determine meaning of unfamiliar words: context of sentence, phonics skills, use of dictionary and thesaurus
  • Expanding vocabulary: using archaic, historical, and archaeological terms
  • Word structure: using roots words, prefixes and suffixes from Greek and Latin
Use of Language Conventions
  • Grammar: review of all information which students should possess; expansion into more complex concepts- eg. Relative, demonstrative and reflexive pronouns, verb phrases, adjectival and adverbial
  • Prepositional phrases, independent and dependent clauses in complex sentence structures
  • Punctuation and capitalization: using quotation marks, commas, capital letters and appropriate end punctuation in dialogue
