Reflecting the expectations, activities in Language Arts (English) series cover:

Reasoning and Critical Thinking
  • Story concepts: identifying the main element and supporting details; making predictions in narrative works; retelling a story to another for of writing and identifying elements of stories: central idea, plot, setting, characteristics and their motivations
  • Comprehension: recognizing differences between opinions, facts, inferences, implications and theories; drawing conclusions and making judgments on the basis of evidence
Understanding Form and Style
  • Structure: recognizing the characteristics of fiction and non-fiction writing
  • Recognizing different forms: drama, biography, informative article
Vocabulary Building
  • Using a variety of strategies to determine meaning of unfamiliar words: context of sentences, dictionary and thesaurus skills
  • Adding new words: using specialized terms for drama and history
  • Word structure: compound words, root words, prefixes and suffixes
Use of Language Conventions
  • Grammar: future verb tenses; using simple and compound sentence structures; using subordinate and co-ordinate conjunctions
  • Punctuation: quotation marks, colons, semi-colons; contractions; apostrophes
  • Spelling: clarifying spelling of synonyms, antonyms, homonyms
